Things to do in Sandusky & Kelleys Island Ohio

Despite living less than three hours away from Ohio, I had never ventured to the area. Recently, I visited Sandusky, Ohio, and Kelleys Island. The area’s most famous attraction is Cedar Point Amusement Park on the bay leading to Lake Erie. Sandusky, Ohio, has a rich history, variety of food, and adventure. It is an excellent introduction to the region.

A special thanks to Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands for hosting my trip. All opinions in this article are my own.

Sandusky Ohio

We arrived at Sandusky on a Thursday evening and caught the last performance end of summer event, the Michael Jackson experience at Jackson Pier.

Accommodations are at a small boutique hotel across from Jackson Street Pier.

I woke up earlier to walk down the pier and watch the sunrise. I didn’t realize the port was facing the north, not the east, but I could still get a good view of the sun rising.

Now it was time for breakfast. We stopped at the Market Place that houses restaurants, ax throwing, a bakery.

Wake Up and Waffle is a new restaurant owned and operated by two sisters. The waffles are made from brioche dough with imported sure pearls, th come directly from Belgium.

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new city is to take a guided tour—this time, I did it on wheels on a Segway. Unfortunately, the company is no longer in operation. Our guide, Jim, from Sandusky Segwave, gave us a lesson.

Ohio has four islands: Lake Erie Kelleys Island, Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, and Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island.

The next stop was to Kelleys Island.

Kelleys Island

Ohio’s largest island, Kelleys Island, is a 30-minute ride on the Jet Express. The island has about two hundred permanent residents. We can come over on the Jet Express, or you can come by private boat. If you plan on staying on the island for a few days, you can bring your car over on the Kelleys Island Ferry boat line from Marblehead Lighthouse. You can rent a golf cart, bike, or taxi for shorter visits.

We arrived around lunchtime and had eaten at Dockers Waterfront Restaurant.

The Glacial Grooves is a National Natural Landmark.

Additional Things to Do

We ran out of time and couldn’t visit everything Sandusky or Kelleys Island. If you are there longer than a day, here are some recommendations.

Sandusky

The Underground Railroad

Sandusky, Ohio, became a major pathway on the Underground Railroad because of the many railroad lines that passed through the city and were located on Lake Erie. It had its code name, “Hope.” You can read about the history in the Market Place wall or grab a pamphlet at the Lake Erie Shores & Islands visitors office. The Follett House Museum/Sundsky Library

Kelleys Island

Kelleys Island has three wineries. The newest one I Monarch Winery & Butterfly Box. Something for the adults and children to enjoy.

This may have been my first visit to the state of Ohio. It will not be my last.
