Southern Gothic at The Windy City Playhouse in Chicago

We were cordially invited to attend a performance of “Southern Gothic,” to be a fly on the wall and witness the dysfunction and drama in the lives of four couples at the Windy City Playhouse in Chicago. “Southern Gothic” is written by Leslie Liautaud and directed by David H. Bell

The performance does not take place on a traditional stage with auditorium seating. We were sitting in a house equipped with living room, kitchen, bathroom, and dining room. The audience is limited to 30 people, and are free to walk around and be within inches of the actors. It was like being on your favorite soap opera set. I found a seat in the living room where I could see into every room and outside, and it turned out to be one of the best spots to watch all of the drama. I did get up a couple of times to get a closer look.

The story takes place on June 30, 1961,  at the home of Mr. Beau and Ellie Coutier of Ashford Georgia. The Coutier’s are throwing their friend Mrs. Suzanne Wellington a 40th birthday party. Her husband, Jackson, is Ellie’s brother. Also in attendance are Charles and Lauren Lyon and Tucker Alsworth and his latest girlfriend, Cassie Smith. It turns out the couples are old college friends except for Cassie.

After a few drinks, truths and secrets begin to spill out. The audience gets to join in on the party and have a drink or two. The show has infidelity, betrayal, lies, and forgiveness.

I was impressed with how the actors stayed in character even when they didn’t have any dialogue. Their expressions and body language are just as crucial to the story as their words. They didn’t seem distracted by the 20+ extra people that were walking around. It was fun to watch and it would make a great date night event or a fun evening out with the girls.
