My trip to Hobbiton in New Zealand

Welcome to Hobbiton

Going to Auckland, New Zealand was a side trip while I was in Australia.  The main place I wanted to visit was Hobbiton.  Although I’m a fan of Lord of the Rings, as of today, I have not seen the Hobbit movies.  I started reading the books years ago but never got into it.  My goal was to read all the books before I saw the movies.  The only reason I saw the Lord of the Rings is because I didn’t have cable so I bought the dvds.

I organized the day trip on Viator through Kiwi Fun Tours.  The Kiwi Fun tour van picked me up and about five other people at the YHA Hostel and two other locations.   We drove about 4 hours from Auckland to the town of Matamata and had lunch.  We drove another 20 minutes to a farm.  Once we got there, we got on a coach bus with about 20 people to the actual movie location.  It was so magical.  All though all the houses are not houses just the facades.  We still felt transported into the film.

My eight favorite pictures of Hobbiton.

Hobbit – Yellow Door

I was honestly expecting maybe three houses that were duplicated on a computer somewhere.  The grounds still has a working sheep farm and is now operated by the owner’s brother and son.

Sheep Farm

Every house was different.  There was the only one you could go into, but the inside only had about 10 ft of space.  Enough to take a picture and bragging rights.

Hi, Come in.

I would suggest everyone visit Hobbiton in New Zealand, fans, and non-fans.  The drive there alone was worth it.
