“A Christmas Story” Comes Home to Hammond Indiana

“A Christmas Story” Comes Home is an exhibit is at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond, Indiana. The window displays are from the Macy’s Department Store in New York City. The movie is based on co-writer Jean  “The Christmas Story,” who grew up in Hammond, Indiana. This year’s exhibit runs from November 9 through December 31, 2019.

I have a confession to make. I just saw the movie in its entirety on a dare in 2018. I may have seen it as a child, but I can’t remember much about it. I think my brother was more into watching it than I was. This display is of the window display that Ralphie and his friends see in the movie. In the window, you can see the Red Ryder BB gun that Ralphie really wants for Christmas. The famous line that I remember from this movie is “You’re going to shoot your eye out.”  The movie plays on several tv screens around the exhibit of the iconic scenes. If you’re like me and have not seen “A Christmas Story,” since I was a little girl, see the movie is refreshing.

The scene I do remember to this day is when the little boy is dared to lick the flagpole. I am not sure what this scene was about. This is where I need to watch the movie.

Here is a closeup of Ralphie wearing his cowboy outfit.

In this window, you see Ralphie’s final attempt to ask Santa for a Red Ryder BB gun.

Santa ends up giving Ralphie the same advice everyone else has given him. “You’re going to shoot your eye out.”

The final window display is a recreation of the neighbor’s dog eating the family’s dinner.

“A Christmas Story” Comes Home exhibit is fun for the entire family. Whether you are a fan of the movie or want a refresher, stop at Indiana Welcome Center, the visitor center in Hammond Indiana.
